for a squad possessing a composition such as ours, it is very disruptive. training is altered through the week to accommodate wednesday night matches, which means just a light session on a monday night to keep the players ticking over rather than working on developing the players on tuesday and thursday evenings as per a standard week. that is particularly prevalent with a squad with such a young average age as ours – it is not as if we can throw together a team of rugged, experienced players in their late 20s or early 30s, who just need to keep themselves ticking over through the week and can go out and know what it takes to win a game. it is what it is though and we have done our best with a number of players missing games through minor injuries and knocks picked up during such an intense run of fixtures. it has been the same for all the clubs in the league as i know teams we have played have dealt with injuries too. at the time of writing, we have played wick, clach, rothes and huntly at home and visited formartine, deveronvale, forres, fraserburgh and buckie, taking a total of 10 points. from the exact same fixtures last season, we were only able to accrue seven points as although the wick home and buckie away wins the year before were defeats this season, we have managed to turn a draw at home to clach and a defeat at home by huntly into wins, a home loss to rothes into a draw and an away defeat at deveronvale into a victory. we also defeated elgin city in the first round of the north of scotland cup before bowing out to forres in the quarter finals to match the showing of the previous two seasons in that competition and all that shows me we are heading in the right direction. speaking of cup competitions, we have been handed a tough draw in the first round of the scottish cup as we welcome west region junior super league high-fliers beith to station park on saturday september 22nd. we very much look forward to the arrival of our guests from ayrshire for what will be a very difficult tie for us. our build-up to the season consisted of home friendlies against ross county and inverness ct with visits to new elgin, burghead thistle and stonehaven. we thank these clubs for agreeing to play matches against us and wish them well for their respective seasons. the match against ross county doubled as gregg main’s testimonial match and it was great to see such a fantastic turnout for our club captain on his big day. it was also the first match where supporters were able to see our new puma home kit featuring the logo of our new main sponsor, logical print and document solutions, up close and personal. the shirt is a nod to the 1975/76 championship-winning side who played in a similar design and i am told by our merchandising guru that they have been flying off the shelves! thank you to everyone who has bought one. this strip – along with all our youth team kits – will be washed by nairn laundry after they are used and we are delighted that they have agreed to continue our partnership which has worked so well for the last two seasons. we have added goalkeeper james kendall from nairn st ninian and defender fraser dingwall from invergordon to the squad over the close season while seamus mcconaghy has come in from the under-20s pool, scoring his first senior goal in saturday’s win over huntly. meanwhile, craig munro and inaki fernandino-soto have extended their contracts and we have promoted eight local players from the under-17s into the under-20s squad with their coach, stuart finnie also recruiting midfielder lewis mitchell from inverness ct. stuart has brought mark greig in as part of his backroom team, too. mark was the club’s under-17s coach last season but his sunday commitments with his own son in the ross county youth setup meant he was unable to continue in that position. but with under-20s matches taking place on monday evenings, it suits his schedule better and we are delighted he can continue his coaching journey with the club. he replaces brian taylor, who has been unable to continue with the squad due to his increased work and family commitments – we thank brian for all his efforts with the club and i know stuart is grateful to him for his offer of filling in if he was ever short of a coach. i am sure it is an offer that will be taken up. leaving the club are nine youth team players who have been released from the under-20s squad or following the end of their time with the under-17s. it is never an easy decision and i know the coaches spent many hours mulling over who to retain for the under-20s for this season before drawing their conclusions. in the end, they felt it was not fair to keep on any player who would not feature in the team much on match days and have settled on a final squad of 20 – we wish everyone released well for their future careers. last season’s top scorer jordan macrae also departed over the close season to cove rangers. the striker was in talks with our manager and director of football about a new contract and indicated he wished to speak to cove before coming to a decision having been made aware of their interest. those talks went well enough for him to ask for a transfer to the reigning highland league champions and an appropriate fee was agreed which suited all parties and the deal went through. jordan was a fantastic servant for the club and his development over the last two seasons has been a joy to watch. that is down to his own hard work and the coaching of the management team and i would like to wish jordan all the best for the future. i look forward to running into him again when we play cove later in the season. macrae was not the only departure from the squad with matty macleod rejecting the offer of a contract to play with the under-20s this season while stephen mackenzie came back for pre-season training but his work commitments changed again, rendering him unavailable on saturdays for the season. with his contract up next
